Jackson "Jax" Teller

Jackson "Jax" Teller is the protagonist of Sons of Anarchy. He is the son of one of the original members and founders of the club, the deceased John Teller. His mother, Gemma Teller Morrow, is in many ways responsible for bringing SAMCRO (Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club Redwood Original, the founding charter) to the town of Charming, California, the fictional town where the show takes place. His step-father Clay Morrow, wears the "First 9" patch (one of the original members), and was president of the charter from 1993 until just recently, when Jax took over. Jax has been referred to as "the prince" and rightfully took his spot as King in the last scene of season 4. 

Jax married his high school sweetheart Tara Knowles. Together they have two children, Abel and Thomas Teller. Abel's birth mother is actually Wendy Case, Jax's first wife, but has been raised nearly since birth by Tara. We follow the story of Jax as he deals with the perils of "the life" and trying to maneuver his club and family out of gun running and drug muling and into legit earning and what he hopes is a safer way of living. He is guided by John's journals chronicling what he thought was wrong with the club and his vision to set it right. Jax was initially introduced as a man that while not afraid to defend his family was a bit afraid to pull the trigger. Over the seasons, and given recent events in the show, he has hardened and is becoming more dangerous. Clay is a ruthless killer and trying to take the gavel away from Jax and in order to get rid of Clay and do what needs to be done, we are seeing Jax transition into what he thought he'd never become.
